Most babies start teething at around 6 months, though it can be anywhere from about 3 months to a year, and the two bottom front teeth usually come through first. Signs include dribbling, sore red gums, chewing on things and being a bit unsettled.

Nappy rash usually shows as red, sore or spotty skin in the nappy area, which may look inflamed and feel warm, and the baby may be uncomfortable during changes. If the rash is severe, blistering, spreading or not improving, or the skin looks infected, see your pharmacist, health visitor or GP.

Nappy rash is often caused by the skin being in contact with wee or poo for too long, rubbing, or sometimes teething or antibiotics. Treat it by changing nappies frequently, cleaning gently, letting the skin have some nappy-free time, and using a barrier cream; a pharmacist can recommend a suitable one.

Teething is often linked with nappy rash, as changes during teething (including more dribbling and looser or more frequent poos) can irritate the delicate skin. Frequent changing and a barrier cream help; see your GP if the rash is severe or your baby seems unwell.

Mild nappy rash often clears up within a few days with frequent changing, gentle cleaning and a barrier cream. If it lasts longer than about a week, gets worse, or looks infected, have it checked by a pharmacist, health visitor or GP.
