Product overview

About Otovent

The drug-free, surgery-free treatment for glue ear: a child blows up a special balloon through one nostril, and the pressure opens the Eustachian tube so the fluid behind the eardrum can drain and hearing clears. Otovent autoinflation is recommended by NICE for children with glue ear while they wait to see whether it resolves, and is used by adults for ear pressure after colds and flying. Pack of a nose piece and five balloons.

Why autoinflation works

Glue ear is fluid trapped in the middle ear because the tube that drains it has closed. Blowing against the resistance of the balloon raises the pressure in the nose just enough to pop the tube open, three times a day for a few weeks, which is the same thing a grommet operation achieves mechanically. Trials show more children's hearing recovers, and fewer need surgery.

How to use

Fit a balloon to the nose piece, hold the nose piece against one nostril, press the other nostril closed, and blow through the nose until the balloon is the size of a grapefruit. Let the air out and repeat on the other side. Two to three times a day, every day, for two to three weeks or as your GP advises. Replace the balloon when it loses its stretch.

Good to know

For children from 3 with an adult watching, and adults. Don't use with a heavy cold or an ear infection, and stop if it hurts. If hearing is still muffled after the course, go back to the GP. Balloons are a choking hazard for small children.
