Ibuprofen — 3 months and over 5kg, with food
Give with or after food and keep the child drinking. Not for babies under 3 months or under 5kg, and not with asthma triggered by ibuprofen or aspirin, a stomach problem, kidney problems, dehydration or chickenpox without advice. Don't give any other ibuprofen or anti-inflammatory product. Three days at most; 24 hours for babies of 3 to 5 months.
When a child needs a doctor
Seek urgent help for a baby under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C or more, a rash that doesn't fade under a glass, a stiff neck, unusual drowsiness or a high-pitched cry, difficulty breathing, a fit, or a child who isn't drinking or has dry nappies. A fever lasting more than three days needs a GP.

About Calprofen 200ml

Children's ibuprofen from the makers of Calpol: Calprofen is ibuprofen 100mg/5ml in a colour-free, sugar-free strawberry suspension that brings down fever and eases pain and inflammation, for babies and children from 3 months (over 5kg) to 12 years. The large 200ml bottle is the pharmacy pack, with a measuring syringe.

Ibuprofen or paracetamol

Paracetamol is the usual first choice; ibuprofen adds an anti-inflammatory effect that helps with swollen, sore things like earache, teething gums and sprains, and it lasts six to eight hours against paracetamol's four. Use one at a time; if it hasn't helped, the other can be given, but don't run both routinely. Ibuprofen needs to go in with food or milk.

How to give

Use the syringe and the carton table for the child's age and weight, from 2.5ml for babies of 3 to 6 months up to 10ml for 8 to 12-year-olds, three times a day and at least six hours apart, with or after food. Babies of 3 to 5 months: no more than 24 hours without a doctor's advice. Older children: no more than three days.

Good to know

Not for babies under 3 months or under 5kg, or a child with asthma triggered by ibuprofen, a stomach problem, kidney problems or dehydration; avoid in chickenpox unless a doctor advises. Don't give any other ibuprofen or anti-inflammatory. A baby under 3 months with a fever, a non-fading rash, a stiff neck, drowsiness, breathing difficulty or a fit needs urgent help.
