Lidocaine — stick to the dose, 7 days max
Don't use any other lidocaine or anaesthetic product at the same time, and don't apply more often than every three hours or more than six times a day: too much can cause serious side effects in a baby. Not for more than seven days. Try a cold teething ring or gum massage first.
Not under 5 months — see a GP if the baby is unwell
Not for babies under 5 months. Teething doesn't cause fever, diarrhoea or illness: a baby who is feverish, unusually drowsy, refusing feeds or getting worse needs a GP or health visitor. Contains sorbitol and xylitol.

Why it's pharmacy-only

Teething gels containing a local anaesthetic are supplied after a pharmacist's check so that the baby is old enough, the simpler measures have been tried, and the dose is understood. Calgel uses the lowest lidocaine strength of the teething gels, which makes it the gentle first choice.

How to use

Babies from 5 months: with a clean finger, rub a pea-sized amount (about 0.2g) onto the sore gum. Repeat after three hours if needed, no more than six times in 24 hours. Not for more than seven days without advice. Wash hands before and after.
