Frequently asked questions

How do you use a NeilMed sinus rinse?

Dissolve one saline sachet in the bottle with lukewarm distilled, or previously boiled and cooled, water (not straight tap water), lean over a sink with your head down, and gently squeeze the solution into one nostril so it drains out of the other. Breathe through your mouth throughout, and blow your nose gently afterwards.

How many NeilMed packets do you use?

Use one saline sachet per bottle of water, as this gives the correct, comfortable salt concentration - check the bottle's fill line and the pack instructions. Using the right amount stops the solution stinging.

How do you clean the NeilMed bottle?

After each use, rinse the bottle and cap with distilled or boiled-and-cooled water, then leave the parts to air dry fully. Replace the bottle periodically as advised on the pack to keep it hygienic.

Can you use a NeilMed sinus rinse every day?

Yes, saline rinsing is gentle enough to use daily to manage ongoing congestion or allergies, as long as you always make it up with safe (distilled or boiled-and-cooled) water. If your symptoms do not improve, see your pharmacist or GP.

Does a NeilMed sinus rinse help with a cold?

Rinsing can help clear the mucus and congestion of a cold, sinusitis or hay fever, making it easier to breathe. It eases the symptoms rather than curing the cold, and works well alongside other cold remedies.

Can a NeilMed sinus rinse cause nosebleeds?

Occasionally the nose can feel dry or bleed a little, especially if the water is too warm or you rinse too forcefully - use lukewarm water, be gentle, and do not rinse too often. If nosebleeds keep happening, stop and speak to your pharmacist or GP.
