Lidocaine — stick to the dose, 7 days max
Don't use any other lidocaine or anaesthetic product at the same time, and don't apply more often than every three hours or more than six times a day: too much can cause serious side effects, especially in babies. Not for more than seven days. Use with care on a damaged or bleeding mouth lining.
See a dentist or GP if it persists
A mouth ulcer lasting more than three weeks, or ulcers that keep returning, need a dentist or GP. For babies: not under 5 months; try a cold teething ring or gum massage first, and see a GP if the baby is feverish, unwell or refusing feeds.

The teething gel with a local anaesthetic in it: Anbesol Teething Gel is lidocaine 1% plus two antiseptics, numbing a sore gum within minutes for babies from 5 months whose teething pain hasn't settled with a cold teething ring or gum massage. It also relieves mouth ulcers and denture irritation in adults. Sugar-free, 10g tube.

Why it's behind the counter

Most teething gels on the general-sale shelf lost their anaesthetic in 2014; lidocaine gels like Anbesol moved to the pharmacy so that someone checks the baby's age and that the simpler measures have been tried first. That's why it sits on our questionnaire, and why it still works when the others don't.

How to use

Babies from 5 months and children: with a clean finger, rub a pea-sized amount (about 0.2g) onto the sore gum. Repeat after three hours if needed, up to six times in 24 hours. Adults: the same amount on a mouth ulcer or denture sore spot. Not for more than seven days.

Good to know

Don't combine with any other lidocaine product or exceed the stated doses; too much, too often, can cause serious side effects in a small child. Use with care on a damaged gum or mouth lining. If your baby seems unwell, has a high temperature or is refusing feeds, see a GP: teething doesn't cause fever or illness. Ulcers lasting more than three weeks need a dentist.
