Product overview
About Benylin Children's Night Coughs
For the cough that keeps the whole house awake: diphenhydramine at a child's dose, with a touch of levomenthol, calms a 6 to 12-year-old's cough and the runny nose and congestion behind it for up to eight hours, so they can sleep. Sugar-free and colour-free. 125ml bottle, pharmacy-only.
Why it's pharmacy-only
Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine, and children's cough medicines containing it are supplied after a pharmacist's check so that the age, the dose and the reason are right. It's a night-time medicine for a cough, not a way to make a child sleep, and it's for a few nights, not every night.
How to give
Children 6 to 12: 10ml at bedtime, repeated every six hours if needed, no more than four doses in 24 hours, using the measuring cup. Not for under-6s. No more than five days without a doctor's advice. Don't give with any other antihistamine or cough and cold medicine.
Good to know
Will make the child drowsy, and occasionally the opposite: if they become restless or excitable, stop. Ask a pharmacist first if the child has asthma, epilepsy or takes other medicines. A cough with wheeze, breathlessness, high fever or lasting more than three weeks needs a GP. Contains sorbitol. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.

Is it safe to give every night?
It's for a few nights of a bad cough — no more than five days without a doctor's advice, and never simply to help a child sleep.
What age is it for?
Children aged 6 to 12. Under-6s shouldn't have diphenhydramine cough medicines; over-12s can use the adult Benylin range.
Can I give it with Calpol or Calprofen?
Yes — it contains no painkiller. Don't give it with any other antihistamine or cough and cold product.
