Hydrocortisone — 7 days max, ages 10+
Use for no more than seven days, then switch to a plain antifungal cream to finish the course. Not for under-10s, the face, eyes, mouth or broken skin, or large areas of skin, and not in pregnancy or breastfeeding without advice. Don't cover with a dressing.
Keep going after it looks better
Fungal infections come back if treatment stops early: continue for two weeks after the skin looks clear (a month in total for athlete's foot, ringworm and jock itch). Keep away from the eyes. It can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms for five days after use. See a pharmacist or GP if there's no improvement after four weeks, or if the scalp or nails are involved.

Product overview

About Canesten Hydrocortisone Athlete's Foot

Antifungal plus anti-inflammatory in one tube: clotrimazole 1% kills the fungus behind athlete's foot and fungal sweat rash, while hydrocortisone 1% calms the itching, redness and swelling within a day or two, so the maddening early stage is over faster. For the first week of treatment only, in adults and children over 10. 15g tube, pharmacy-only.

When to use the hydrocortisone version

Plain clotrimazole clears athlete's foot but does nothing for the itch for the first few days. If the skin is angry, inflamed and keeping you awake scratching, a week of the combination gets you comfortable, then a plain antifungal such as Canesten Cream finishes the four-week course. It's also licensed for candidal intertrigo, the raw fungal rash in skin folds under the breasts or in the groin.

How to use

Wash and dry the area, then rub in a thin layer twice a day for up to seven days. After seven days, or as soon as the inflammation has settled, switch to a hydrocortisone-free antifungal cream and keep treating for at least a month in total, continuing two weeks after the skin looks clear.

Good to know

Not for under-10s, the face, eyes, mouth or broken skin, and not over large areas or under a dressing. Ask a pharmacist first in pregnancy or breastfeeding. It can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.
