Thrush — women 16 to 60, not a first episode
Supplied without prescription for vaginal thrush in women aged 16 to 60 who have had it diagnosed before. See a GP instead for a first episode, more than two episodes in six months, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, diabetes, or if you're under 16 or over 60. Don't use during a period.
See a GP if these apply
Irregular or abnormal bleeding, blood-stained or foul-smelling discharge, ulcers, blisters or sores, lower abdominal pain, pain on passing urine, fever or chills, or no improvement after seven days all need a doctor rather than more treatment. Clotrimazole weakens latex condoms and diaphragms for five days.

Product overview

About Canesten Thrush External Cream

The double-strength cream for the outside of thrush: clotrimazole 2% soothes the itching, soreness and redness of the vulva that comes with vaginal thrush, and treats the yeast causing it. Used alongside a pessary or internal cream that clears the infection inside, or on its own for external symptoms. Also for a partner's penile thrush, to stop the infection passing back and forth. 20g tube, pharmacy-only.

External and internal

Vaginal thrush lives inside and irritates outside. A single-dose pessary or internal cream treats the source; this cream deals with the external itch, which is usually what's driving you mad. The two together are the standard combination, and the 2% strength works faster on the skin than the 1% cream.

How to use

Apply thinly to the itchy, sore area two or three times a day, rubbing in gently. Keep going until the symptoms have gone; if they haven't improved within seven days of also treating internally, see a GP. Partners: apply to the penis two or three times a day for one to two weeks.

Good to know

For women aged 16 to 60 who have had thrush diagnosed before. A first episode, more than two episodes in six months, pregnancy, diabetes, or any bleeding, ulcers, pain or smelly discharge need a GP rather than the pharmacy. It weakens latex condoms and diaphragms for five days. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.
