Product overview

About Almus Ibuprofen and Codeine

The same ibuprofen 200mg and codeine phosphate 12.8mg as Nurofen Plus, from Almus, the pharmacy-brand generic range. Ibuprofen tackles inflammation and codeine adds a second, opioid painkiller for the short-term relief of acute pain that ibuprofen alone hasn't managed: dental pain, period pain, back pain, migraine and sciatica. Pharmacy-only, for three days' use at most. 32 tablets.

Why a combination

Ibuprofen and codeine work in different ways, at the site of the pain and on how the brain registers it, so together they relieve more than either does alone. That extra strength is why codeine products are kept for pain that hasn't responded to a plain painkiller, and why they're for a few days, not a habit.

How to take

Adults and children over 12: one or two tablets every four to six hours with water, with or after food, and no more than six tablets in 24 hours. Take for no longer than three days; if the pain hasn't settled, see a pharmacist or GP rather than carry on. Not for children under 12.

Good to know

Codeine can cause addiction if taken beyond three days, and stopping after longer use can bring withdrawal. Prolonged use of ibuprofen can cause serious kidney problems. Not with other NSAIDs or codeine products, a stomach ulcer, severe asthma, heart or kidney disease, in the last three months of pregnancy, or when breastfeeding. Can cause drowsiness. One pack per order, applied across all codeine products.
