Product overview
About Nurofen Plus
Nurofen Plus is a dual-action painkiller that combines two ingredients in every tablet: ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory painkiller, and codeine, an opioid painkiller. It is designed for the short-term relief of acute, moderate pain that has not been eased by ibuprofen, paracetamol or aspirin on their own.
What it's used for
Nurofen Plus can help with short-lasting bouts of moderate pain such as migraine, headache, backache, period pain, dental pain, neuralgia, and rheumatic or muscular pain. The two ingredients work in different ways — ibuprofen reduces inflammation and pain, while codeine acts on the way your body senses pain — so the combination can help when a single painkiller has not been enough.
Who can take it
Nurofen Plus is for adults and children aged 12 and over, and should not be given to children under 12. It is not suitable for everyone — for example if you are breastfeeding, have had a stomach ulcer, or are sensitive to anti-inflammatory painkillers. The short questionnaire you complete at checkout helps our pharmacist check it is right for you.
How to take it
Always take Nurofen Plus exactly as described on the pack and in the leaflet inside. Take the tablets with water, with or after food, leaving the recommended gap between doses, and never take more than the pack allows in 24 hours. Do not take it for longer than three days. If you need pain relief for longer than this, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
A pharmacy medicine
Nurofen Plus is a Pharmacy (P) medicine, which means it can only be sold under the supervision of a pharmacist. When you order, you will answer a few short questions about who the medicine is for and your health. Our pharmacist reviews every order before it is dispatched, and may contact you for more information or decline the sale if the medicine is not suitable. To keep everyone safe, we sell a maximum of one pack per order.
When to see a doctor
Speak to your doctor if your pain lasts more than three days or gets worse, or if you find you need this medicine often. Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing), pass black or bloodstained stools, or have severe or ongoing stomach pain.

Important information
This medicine contains codeine and can cause addiction if used for more than three days continuously. Using painkillers too often or for too long can also make headaches worse. Because it contains ibuprofen, do not take it alongside other anti-inflammatory painkillers, and check with your pharmacist first if you have asthma, high blood pressure, indigestion or a history of stomach ulcers, or heart, kidney or liver problems. It may make you feel drowsy, so do not drive if affected, and avoid alcohol. Always read the label and the patient information leaflet before use, and keep this and all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nurofen Plus addictive?
It can be. Nurofen Plus contains codeine, which can cause addiction if you take it for more than three days in a row. To reduce this risk, use it for the shortest time possible and never for longer than three days without advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
How long can I take Nurofen Plus for?
No more than three days. It is intended for short-term pain only. If your pain lasts longer than three days or keeps coming back, stop taking it and speak to your doctor or pharmacist rather than continuing.
Why do I have to answer questions to buy it?
Nurofen Plus is a Pharmacy (P) medicine, so it can only be supplied under a pharmacist's supervision. The short questionnaire lets our pharmacist check the medicine is safe and suitable for you before your order is approved and sent.
Can I take Nurofen Plus with paracetamol?
Paracetamol can often be taken alongside ibuprofen-based painkillers, but because Nurofen Plus also contains codeine you should check with your pharmacist first, and never take it with other codeine-containing or anti-inflammatory (NSAID) painkillers. Always read the labels of any other medicines you are taking.
What's the difference between Nurofen and Nurofen Plus?
Standard Nurofen contains ibuprofen only and can be bought from general shops. Nurofen Plus adds codeine for stronger, short-term pain relief, which is why it is a pharmacy-only medicine with extra safety checks.
Can I drive after taking it?
Nurofen Plus can make some people feel drowsy or dizzy. If you are affected, do not drive or operate machinery, and avoid alcohol while taking it.
Can I take it while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Do not take it if you are breastfeeding, as codeine passes into breast milk. Avoid it in the last three months of pregnancy, and speak to your doctor before using it at any stage of pregnancy or if you are trying to conceive.
How many packs can I order?
One pack per order. This limit applies to all codeine-containing medicines to help prevent misuse and keep you safe.
