Pharmacy medicine
This is a Pharmacy (P) medicine. To buy it you'll answer a few short questions so our pharmacist can check it's suitable and safe for you. Your order is only dispatched once the pharmacist has approved it, and we may contact you or decline the sale if needed. Maximum one pack per order.
Contains codeine — can cause addiction
This medicine contains codeine and can cause addiction if you take it continuously for more than three days. Taking a painkiller for headaches too often or for too long can also make them worse. Use it for the shortest time possible and never for more than three days without seeing your doctor or pharmacist. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Contains ibuprofen
Do not take with other ibuprofen or anti-inflammatory (NSAID) painkillers. Speak to your pharmacist or doctor first if you have or have had a stomach ulcer, indigestion, asthma, high blood pressure, or heart, kidney or liver problems, or if you take blood-thinning or other regular medicines. Take with or after food.
Not for children under 12
Do not give to children under 12 years, because of the risk of serious breathing problems from codeine. Suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over — take for the shortest time possible.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not use if you are breastfeeding, as codeine passes into breast milk. Do not use in the last three months of pregnancy, and speak to your doctor before using at any stage of pregnancy or if you are trying to conceive.
May cause drowsiness
This medicine may make you feel sleepy. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery, and avoid alcohol while taking it.
When to get medical advice
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if your pain lasts more than three days or gets worse, or if you find you need this medicine often. Seek urgent help for a serious allergic reaction, black or bloodstained stools, or severe stomach pain.

Product overview

About Nurofen Plus

Nurofen Plus is a dual-action painkiller that combines two ingredients in every tablet: ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory painkiller, and codeine, an opioid painkiller. It is designed for the short-term relief of acute, moderate pain that has not been eased by ibuprofen, paracetamol or aspirin on their own.

What it's used for

Nurofen Plus can help with short-lasting bouts of moderate pain such as migraine, headache, backache, period pain, dental pain, neuralgia, and rheumatic or muscular pain. The two ingredients work in different ways — ibuprofen reduces inflammation and pain, while codeine acts on the way your body senses pain — so the combination can help when a single painkiller has not been enough.

Who can take it

Nurofen Plus is for adults and children aged 12 and over, and should not be given to children under 12. It is not suitable for everyone — for example if you are breastfeeding, have had a stomach ulcer, or are sensitive to anti-inflammatory painkillers. The short questionnaire you complete at checkout helps our pharmacist check it is right for you.

How to take it

Always take Nurofen Plus exactly as described on the pack and in the leaflet inside. Take the tablets with water, with or after food, leaving the recommended gap between doses, and never take more than the pack allows in 24 hours. Do not take it for longer than three days. If you need pain relief for longer than this, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

A pharmacy medicine

Nurofen Plus is a Pharmacy (P) medicine, which means it can only be sold under the supervision of a pharmacist. When you order, you will answer a few short questions about who the medicine is for and your health. Our pharmacist reviews every order before it is dispatched, and may contact you for more information or decline the sale if the medicine is not suitable. To keep everyone safe, we sell a maximum of one pack per order.

When to see a doctor

Speak to your doctor if your pain lasts more than three days or gets worse, or if you find you need this medicine often. Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing), pass black or bloodstained stools, or have severe or ongoing stomach pain.
