Product overview

About Actifed Dry Coughs

Three medicines in one spoonful for the cold that brings a dry, tickly cough: dextromethorphan to calm the cough reflex, pseudoephedrine to unblock a stuffy nose and clear catarrh, and triprolidine, an antihistamine, to dry a runny nose. Pharmacy-only, for adults and children over 12. 100ml bottle with measuring spoon.

Why a pharmacy cold remedy

Most general-sale decongestants use phenylephrine; pseudoephedrine is the one that reliably clears a blocked nose, which is why Actifed is kept behind the counter. Add the cough suppressant and antihistamine and one dose covers the four symptoms that keep you awake.

How to take

Adults and children over 12: 10ml every four to six hours, up to four doses in 24 hours, using the spoon supplied. Not for under-12s. Don't take with any other cold, flu or decongestant product, and keep to a few days: if you're no better after a week, see a pharmacist or GP.

Good to know

Triprolidine can cause drowsiness, so no driving or alcohol until you know how it affects you. Not suitable with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, glaucoma or within 14 days of an MAOI antidepressant, and dextromethorphan shouldn't be mixed with antidepressants. The questionnaire checks each of these. Pseudoephedrine is limited to one pack per order.
