Product overview
About Optrex Infected Eye Drops
The antibiotic eye drops for bacterial conjunctivitis: chloramphenicol, the same treatment a GP prescribes, available from the pharmacy after a short check. A five-day course clears the sticky, red, gritty infection in adults and children over 2. 10ml bottle.
When antibiotic drops are the answer
Bacterial conjunctivitis is the one with the yellow, crusty discharge that glues the lashes by morning. Viral and allergic conjunctivitis look similar but don't respond to antibiotics — which is exactly what the questionnaire sorts out before our pharmacist approves the order. Most bacterial cases clear on their own eventually; chloramphenicol gets you there in days rather than weeks.
How to use
One drop into the affected eye every two hours for the first two days (while awake), then every four hours, for five days in total — keep going even once the eye looks better. Wash hands before and after, don't let the dropper touch the eye, and use the ointment at night if you want overnight cover.
Good to know
Leave contact lenses out for the course and 24 hours after. Not for under-2s, or with a personal or family history of blood disorders. Eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or no improvement within 48 hours means a pharmacist, optician or GP the same day.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know it's bacterial conjunctivitis?
Yellow or green sticky discharge, lashes glued shut in the morning, usually one eye first. Watery discharge with itching points to viral or allergic conjunctivitis, which antibiotics won't help — the questionnaire checks.
Drops or ointment?
Drops through the day, ointment at night for overnight cover — many people use both. Ointment alone suits anyone who finds drops difficult.
Can I wear contact lenses?
No — leave them out for the whole course and for 24 hours after it finishes.
