Remove contact lenses for the course and 24 hours after. Eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or no improvement after 48 hours needs a pharmacist, optician or GP the same day.

About Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis Eye Ointment

Chloramphenicol 1% in an eye ointment: the overnight partner to antibiotic drops, or a stand-alone treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis for people who can't manage drops. A thin ribbon inside the lower lid stays put for hours — ideal for the night, when drops would be washed out by sleep. 4g tube, adults and children over 2.

Ointment vs drops

Drops act fast but drain away quickly; ointment blurs the vision for a few minutes but keeps antibiotic on the eye far longer. The classic routine is drops by day and ointment at bedtime. Used alone, the ointment is applied three or four times a day.

How to use

Pull the lower lid down gently and squeeze a small ribbon of ointment along the inside, then close the eye and blink. Use at night alongside drops, or three to four times daily on its own, for five days — finish the course. Wash hands before and after and don't let the nozzle touch the eye.

Good to know

Expect blurred vision for a few minutes after each application — don't drive straight away. Contact lenses stay out for the course and 24 hours after. Not for under-2s or with a history of blood disorders; no improvement in 48 hours, pain or light sensitivity means a same-day pharmacist, optician or GP.
