About Golden Eye Drops
The antiseptic eye drops for minor eye infections: propamidine isetionate 0.1%, a Golden Eye standby since the 1940s, for mild conjunctivitis, styes and sore, sticky eyes that don't need an antibiotic. Available from the pharmacy after a short check. 10ml bottle.
Antiseptic vs antibiotic
Not every red eye needs chloramphenicol. Propamidine is an antiseptic that works against the common bacteria behind minor infections without adding to antibiotic use — the sensible first step for a mild, early infection, with the antibiotic ointment held in reserve if it doesn't settle within two days.
How to use
One or two drops into the affected eye up to four times a day, as directed on the pack. Wash hands before and after, keep the dropper off the eye, and leave contact lenses out during treatment. Discard the bottle four weeks after opening.
Good to know
If there's no improvement after two days, or the eye becomes painful, light-sensitive or vision changes, stop and see a pharmacist, optician or GP the same day. Not for use with severe or spreading infections.

No — Golden Eye Drops are propamidine, an antiseptic for minor infections. Chloramphenicol is the antibiotic for confirmed bacterial conjunctivitis; Golden Eye makes that as an ointment too.
How long can I use them?
If the eye isn't improving after two days, stop and get it looked at — it may need an antibiotic or a different diagnosis.
Can I wear contact lenses?
Leave them out for the whole course and until the eye is completely better.
