Malathion — ages 6 months+, follow the timings
Not for babies under 6 months. Apply to dry hair or skin and leave for the full time (12 hours or overnight for lice, 24 hours for scabies) before washing off; repeat after seven days. Keep away from eyes, and don't use a hairdryer on it. Ask a pharmacist first in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for a child under 2 with scabies.
Check and treat contacts
Treat everyone in the household who has live lice (or, for scabies, everyone in close contact, on the same day, even without itching). Detection-comb wet hair on days 3 and 7 after treatment; if live lice are still found after the second application, see a pharmacist about a different product. Scabies itch can last weeks after successful treatment.

Product overview

About Derbac-M

The malathion treatment that covers all three: head lice, crab (pubic) lice and the scabies mite, in an alcohol-free, water-based liquid that suits asthma sufferers and sensitive skin. One application kills lice and mites; a second a week later catches anything that hatched in between. For adults and children from 6 months. 150ml, pharmacy-only.

Why malathion

Most head lice products on the shelf work physically, by coating the lice; malathion is an insecticide that kills lice and eggs and is the one licensed for scabies as well, which needs whole-body treatment that the silicone lotions can't do. Being water-based rather than alcohol-based, it doesn't sting broken skin or set off asthma the way the older alcoholic lotions could.

How to use

Head lice: rub into dry hair and scalp until wet, parting to the roots, leave to dry naturally for 12 hours or overnight (no hairdryer), then wash out. Comb through wet hair with a detection comb; repeat the whole treatment after seven days. Scabies: apply to the whole body from the chin down, including under the nails and between fingers and toes (and the scalp, face and ears in the under-2s and elderly), leave for 24 hours, wash off, and repeat after seven days. Crab lice: all hairy areas including beard and moustache, left overnight.

Good to know

Not for under 6 months. Treat all close contacts for scabies on the same day, and everyone in the house with live lice. Scabies itch can continue for weeks after the mites are dead; that's not treatment failure. Keep away from eyes, and ask a pharmacist first in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.
