Supplied without prescription for vaginal thrush in women aged 16 to 60 who have had it diagnosed before. See a GP instead for a first episode, more than two episodes in six months, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, diabetes, or if you're under 16 or over 60. Don't use during a period.

Irregular or abnormal bleeding, blood-stained or foul-smelling discharge, ulcers, blisters or sores, lower abdominal pain, pain on passing urine, fever or chills, or no improvement after seven days all need a doctor rather than more treatment. Clotrimazole weakens latex condoms and diaphragms for five days.

About Canesten Thrush Soft Gel Pessary

One dose, one night: a single 500mg clotrimazole soft gel pessary inserted at bedtime treats the cause of vaginal thrush while you sleep. The soft gel version is a smooth, oval capsule that's easier to insert and dissolves quickly, with less of the chalky residue of a traditional pessary. Pharmacy-only, for women aged 16 to 60 who've had thrush before.

Why a single dose

Thrush is a yeast overgrowth, and one high dose of clotrimazole placed where the yeast is clears it in most women within a few days, with no course to remember. Pair it with Canesten Thrush External Cream to soothe the itching outside while the pessary works inside.

How to use

At bedtime, load the soft gel pessary into the applicator, lie on your back with knees bent, insert as deep as is comfortable and press the plunger. It can also be inserted with a clean finger. Some discharge or leakage the next day is normal; a panty liner helps. A second dose can be used if symptoms persist, but no improvement after seven days means a GP visit. Not during a period.

Good to know

For women aged 16 to 60 who have had thrush diagnosed before. A first episode, more than two episodes in six months, pregnancy, diabetes, or any bleeding, ulcers, pain, fever or smelly discharge need a GP.
