Hyoscine butylbromide — ages 6+
Not with narrow-angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, a blocked or severely enlarged bowel, or a fast heart rate without advice. Can cause a dry mouth or blurred vision. Not for continuous use: pain that keeps returning needs its cause investigated.
Severe or persisting pain needs urgent help
Get medical help straight away if abdominal pain is severe, persists or worsens, or comes with fever, vomiting, a change in bowel habit, tenderness, fainting, low blood pressure or blood in the stool. Ask a pharmacist first in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

About Buscopan Cramps

The antispasmodic for cramping pain: hyoscine butylbromide 10mg relaxes the muscle in the wall of the gut, bowel and bladder, so it targets the source of abdominal cramps, IBS pain and period-type cramping rather than masking it. Buscopan Cramps is the pharmacy pack with the fuller licence, for adults and children from 6. 20 tablets.

Cramps or IBS Relief?

Same tablet, different label. Buscopan IBS Relief on the shelf is licensed only for medically diagnosed IBS in adults. Buscopan Cramps is licensed for spasm of the gut and urinary tract generally, and for children from 6, which is why it sits behind the counter with a questionnaire. If your cramps aren't IBS, this is the one.

How to take

Adults and children over 12: two tablets four times a day, up to eight in 24 hours, swallowed whole with water. Children 6 to 12: one tablet three times a day. For IBS, start with one tablet three times a day and increase if needed. Not for under-6s.

Good to know
