Warts and verrucas are thickened, infected skin. Salicylic acid softens and breaks that skin down layer by layer, while the daily filing lifts the dead tissue away and lets the gel reach deeper. It's slow but reliable — most clear within 12 weeks — and it's the first-line treatment pharmacists recommend.

Once daily, ideally at night: soak the area, dry it, apply one or two drops of gel to the wart only and let it dry to a film. Every few days, peel off the old film and gently rub away dead skin with the emery board before reapplying. Continue until the wart has gone — up to 12 weeks. Check the pack for the minimum age.

Not for the face, genitals, moles, birthmarks or broken skin, and not for diabetes or poor circulation without advice. The gel is flammable until dry — keep clear of flames. A lesion that bleeds, changes or isn't clearly a wart should be seen by a pharmacist or GP.
