Adult men only — see your GP within 6 months
For men 18 and over with erectile dysfunction; not for women, under-18s or recreational use. One tablet in 24 hours at most. Erectile dysfunction can be an early sign of heart disease or diabetes, so arrange a GP check within six months of starting.
Never with nitrates, poppers or riociguat
Taken with GTN or isosorbide (angina medicines), amyl nitrite 'poppers', nicorandil or riociguat it can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. Not after a heart attack or stroke in the last six months, with unstable angina, heart failure, uncontrolled or very low blood pressure, or severe liver or kidney disease. Ask a pharmacist first if you take an alpha-blocker such as doxazosin or tamsulosin.
Priapism, vision or hearing loss = emergency
An erection lasting more than four hours, or any sudden loss of or change in vision or hearing, needs immediate medical help (A&E or 999). Not suitable after a previous loss of vision from NAION, with retinitis pigmentosa, or with a penile deformity.

Tadalafil or sildenafil

Sildenafil (Viagra Connect, Aronix) works for around four hours and is best on an empty stomach; tadalafil lasts up to 36 hours and isn't affected by food. For a planned evening either works; for a weekend away, or anyone who'd rather not watch the clock, tadalafil is the one men switch to. Both need sexual stimulation to work.

How to take

Adult men: one 10mg tablet with water at least 30 minutes before sex, with or without food, no more than one in 24 hours. Avoid heavy drinking and large amounts of grapefruit juice. If it hasn't worked after a few attempts, or you use it regularly, see your GP within six months for a check on the cause.

Good to know

Never with nitrates (GTN spray, isosorbide), poppers or riociguat: the drop in blood pressure can be dangerous.
