Adult men only — see your GP within 6 months
For men 18 and over with erectile dysfunction; not for women, under-18s or recreational use. One tablet in 24 hours at most. Erectile dysfunction can be an early sign of heart disease or diabetes, so arrange a GP check within six months of starting.
Never with nitrates, poppers or riociguat
Taken with GTN or isosorbide (angina medicines), amyl nitrite 'poppers', nicorandil or riociguat it can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. Not after a heart attack or stroke in the last six months, with unstable angina, heart failure, uncontrolled or very low blood pressure, or severe liver or kidney disease. Ask a pharmacist first if you take an alpha-blocker such as doxazosin or tamsulosin.
Priapism, vision or hearing loss = emergency
An erection lasting more than four hours, or any sudden loss of or change in vision or hearing, needs immediate medical help (A&E or 999). Not suitable after a previous loss of vision from NAION, with retinitis pigmentosa, or with a penile deformity.

How it works

Sildenafil relaxes the blood vessels in the penis so that, with sexual stimulation, blood flows in and stays there. It doesn't cause an erection on its own and doesn't affect desire; it works for around four hours, and most men find it takes two or three attempts to get the full effect.

How to take

Adult men: one 50mg tablet with water about an hour before sex, no more than one in 24 hours. It works faster on an empty stomach; a heavy meal or a lot of alcohol delays and weakens it. If it hasn't worked after several attempts, or you're using it regularly, see your GP within six months for a check on what's behind the ED.

Good to know
