Lidocaine — stick to the dose, 7 days max
Don't use any other lidocaine or anaesthetic product at the same time, and don't apply more often than every three hours or more than six times a day: too much can cause serious side effects, especially in babies. Not for more than seven days. Use with care on a damaged or bleeding mouth lining.
See a dentist or GP if it persists
A mouth ulcer lasting more than three weeks, or ulcers that keep returning, need a dentist or GP. For babies: not under 5 months; try a cold teething ring or gum massage first, and see a GP if the baby is feverish, unwell or refusing feeds.
Product overview
About Anbesol Liquid
The little bottle that's lived in the family bathroom cabinet for decades: Anbesol Liquid is lidocaine 0.9% with two antiseptics, chlorocresol and cetylpyridinium, so it numbs the sting of a mouth ulcer, a sore denture rub or a teething gum within moments and helps keep the sore spot clean while it heals. Sugar-free, for adults and children, and for babies from 5 months. 10ml.
Why the liquid
A liquid goes exactly where a fingertip puts it and dries to a barely-there film, so it's the pick for an ulcer at the back of the mouth, a rub under a denture plate, or a teething baby who won't tolerate a gel being worked into the gum. It's also the one for a handbag or a desk drawer: no tube, no mess.
How to use
Cover the bottle mouth with a clean fingertip, turn the bottle upside down once and back, then dab the liquid onto the sore area. Adults: apply twice, repeated after three hours if needed. Children and babies from 5 months: one application (about 0.25ml), repeated after three hours if needed, up to six times a day.
Good to know
Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic, so don't use any other lidocaine product at the same time and don't exceed the doses above. Not for more than seven days. A mouth ulcer that lasts more than three weeks, or keeps coming back, needs a dentist or GP. Not for babies under 5 months; for teething, try a cold teething ring first. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions
Liquid or teething gel?
Same ingredients, different form. The liquid dabs onto hard-to-reach ulcers and denture sores and suits babies who resist a gel; the gel stays put on a teething gum longer.
How often can I use it?
Adults: two applications, repeated after three hours if needed. Children and babies: one application, up to six times a day. Never more than seven days in a row.
Is it safe for babies?
From 5 months, at the child's dose, when a teething ring or gum massage hasn't helped. Not under 5 months, and never with another lidocaine product.
