No more than four tablets a day or two days per attack. Not with Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, liver problems, glaucoma, prostate enlargement or in pregnancy.
May cause drowsiness
Don't drive or use machinery if affected, and avoid alcohol. Older people are more prone to low blood pressure and movement side effects; stop and seek advice for unusual muscle stiffness, restlessness or tremor.

Why buccal

Migraine slows the stomach, so anti-sickness tablets that are swallowed can sit unabsorbed, or come straight back. A buccal tablet is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, bypassing the stomach altogether. Taken early, it settles the nausea so that a painkiller taken with it can actually be kept down and absorbed.

How to take

Adults 18 and over: one or two tablets twice a day. Place the tablet high up between your top lip and gum and let it dissolve, which takes an hour or so; don't chew, suck or swallow it, and don't eat or drink until it's gone. No more than four tablets a day and no more than two days per attack.

Good to know

Only for migraine that has already been diagnosed: a first severe headache with sickness, or one with a stiff neck, rash, confusion or weakness, needs urgent medical help. Prochlorperazine can cause drowsiness, so no driving or alcohol. Not with Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, liver problems, glaucoma, prostate enlargement or in pregnancy; the questionnaire covers these. If you need it more than a few times a month, see your GP about migraine prevention.
