Product overview

About Almus Chesty Cough Syrup

A chesty cough medicine that does two jobs: ipecacuanha extract, a traditional expectorant, loosens the phlegm sitting on your chest so each cough clears more, while glycerin and lemon soothe the throat the coughing has made raw. Almus is the pharmacy-own brand — same job as the big names, sensible price. 200ml.

Expectorant, not suppressant

A chesty cough exists to move mucus, so the wrong move is to silence it. An expectorant thins and loosens the phlegm instead, making the cough productive rather than endless — which is why chesty and dry coughs need different bottles. The glycerin does the throat-coating that keeps the tickle down between coughs.

How to take

Take by the spoonful as directed on the label, spacing doses through the day. Check the label for the minimum age and children's doses. Plenty of fluids helps the expectorant along.

Good to know

Check the sugar content if you're diabetic. A cough that runs past three weeks, brings up blood or discoloured phlegm, or comes with breathlessness or chest pain needs a GP, not another bottle.
