Product overview
About Robitussin Chesty Cough Medicine
The expectorant for a cough that rattles: guaifenesin thins the thick mucus sitting in the chest so each cough brings more of it up and the airways clear faster. Non-drowsy, sugar free, from a brand that has made cough medicine since 1948. Adults and children from 12. 100ml bottle.
Why guaifenesin
A chesty cough is the lungs trying to shift phlegm; a suppressant would stop them doing it. Guaifenesin takes the opposite approach, loosening the mucus so the cough you have becomes productive and the chest clears sooner. It's the active the NHS points to for a chesty cough, and Robitussin is the version with no sugar and no drowsy antihistamine, so it suits daytime and diabetics.
How to take
Adults and children over 12: one 10ml measure up to four times a day, using the cup provided. Drink plenty of water alongside it; the active needs fluid to thin the mucus. Not for under-12s.
Good to know
If the cough lasts more than 7 days, or you have asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or a smoker's cough, see a pharmacist or GP. Contains a small amount of alcohol and sorbitol. Don't combine with other cough and cold medicines, and ask a pharmacist first in pregnancy. Also in a 200ml bottle; for a dry, tickly cough, Covonia Dry & Tickly is the one.

Frequently asked questions
Is Robitussin for a dry or chesty cough?
Chesty. It loosens mucus so you cough it up; it won't quieten a dry tickle, which needs a soothing linctus instead.
Can I take it with paracetamol?
Yes, it contains no painkiller. Avoid combining it with other cough and cold medicines, especially all-in-one products that may already contain guaifenesin.
Why does it say sugar free but list sorbitol?
Sorbitol is a sugar substitute that doesn't raise blood glucose the way sugar does; it's why the medicine suits diabetics, but it isn't suitable with hereditary fructose intolerance.
