Product overview
About Pepto-Bismol
The pink bottle, known worldwide: bismuth subsalicylate relieving five stomach symptoms at once — heartburn, indigestion, nausea, upset stomach and diarrhoea — by coating the stomach lining with a protective layer. One product for the stomach that doesn't know quite what's wrong with it. 120ml oral suspension.
Protective coating action
Rather than tackling one mechanism, bismuth subsalicylate soothes and coats the irritated stomach and gut lining while settling the symptoms on top. That breadth is exactly why it earned its place in travel bags and hotel minibars around the world.
How to take
Adults and children 16+: shake well and take the dose on the label, repeating as needed within the daily maximum. Don't be alarmed by a temporary darkening of the tongue or stools — that's the bismuth, it's harmless, and it passes.
Good to know
Contains a salicylate, so it is not for children or teenagers, not for anyone allergic to aspirin, and needs a pharmacist's check if you take anticoagulants. Symptoms persisting beyond two days deserve advice.

Frequently asked questions
Why has my tongue gone dark?
A harmless, temporary reaction between the bismuth and sulphur in saliva. Stools can darken too. Both pass once you stop.
Who shouldn't take it?
Children and teenagers, anyone allergic to aspirin or salicylates, and anyone on anticoagulants without a pharmacist's check — it contains a salicylate.
How long can I take it for?
Short-term only. Symptoms lasting beyond a couple of days deserve proper advice.
