Product overview

About Colpermin IBS Relief

Peppermint oil, delivered where IBS actually happens. Each Colpermin capsule is coated to pass through the stomach intact and release its 0.2ml of peppermint oil in the bowel, where it relaxes the gut muscle to ease the cramping pain, bloating, wind and urgency of irritable bowel syndrome. Antispasmodics are the first-line treatment NICE recommends for IBS pain, and peppermint oil is the one you can buy without a prescription. For adults and children from 15. 20 capsules.

Why enteric-coated

Peppermint oil released in the stomach relaxes the wrong muscle, the valve at the top, and causes heartburn. The coating keeps the oil sealed until the capsule reaches the small bowel, so the antispasmodic effect lands on the gut wall that's cramping. That's why the capsules must be swallowed whole and not taken with indigestion remedies, which dissolve the coating early.

How to use

One capsule three times a day, swallowed whole with a little water, ideally 30 to 60 minutes before meals and never straight after food. If the discomfort is severe, increase to two capsules three times a day. Most people use it for one to two weeks at a time; it can be continued for two to three months if the symptoms persist.

Good to know

Contains arachis (peanut) oil, so it's not for anyone allergic to peanuts or soya. Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. See a GP before treating yourself if this is your first bout, you're over 40 with a change in bowel habit, or there's blood in your stools, weight loss, fever or vomiting. Our digestive health range has the rest.
