About Care Menthol Crystals
The strongest steam you can make at home: a crystal or two of menthol BP dissolved in a bowl of hot water releases a rush of cooling vapour that opens a blocked nose, clears the sinuses and shifts catarrh. Care's 5g tub is the pharmacy own-brand version of a cold-season classic and holds far more inhalations than its size suggests.
Why menthol crystals
Menthol triggers the cold receptors in the airways, so the nose feels open and the head clears, the same effect as a vapour rub at full strength. Crystals are the traditional, economical way to get it, and a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil in the same bowl makes the classic cold-and-flu steam.
How to use
Add one or two crystals to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water, lean over with a towel over your head and breathe the vapour for a few minutes. Repeat two or three times a day while congested. Keep the lid tight between uses, as menthol evaporates.
Good to know

How many crystals do I use?
One or two in a bowl of hot water is plenty; the vapour is strong. Keep the lid tight afterwards so the rest don't evaporate.
Can children use menthol steam?
Not babies or young children; the vapour is too strong and hot water is a scald risk. For older children, an adult should hold the bowl and keep the session short.
Can I add eucalyptus oil?
Yes, a couple of drops in the same bowl is the traditional cold steam. Don't add both to a facial steamer without checking its instructions.
