Product overview
About Care Epsom Salts
Old-fashioned, dual-purpose and still in every pharmacy: Care Epsom salts are pure magnesium sulphate heptahydrate. Dissolved in water and drunk, they relieve occasional constipation; dissolved in warm water and applied as a compress, they soothe sprains, bruises and boils. 300g tub.
How magnesium sulphate works
Taken by mouth it's an osmotic laxative — it draws water into the bowel, softening the contents and prompting a movement, usually within a few hours. On the skin, a warm Epsom compress draws fluid from swollen tissue, which is why it's the traditional dressing for a fresh bruise or a boil that needs bringing to a head.
How to use
Constipation: dissolve the labelled amount in a glass of water and drink; a little fruit juice masks the taste. Adults only unless the label says otherwise. Sprains, bruises, boils: dissolve in warm water and apply on cotton wool or lint as a compress.
Good to know
A saline laxative is for occasional use, not a routine. Avoid with kidney disease, or if you're dehydrated, and don't give to children below the age on the label. Constipation that keeps returning, or comes with pain or bleeding, needs a pharmacist or GP.

Frequently asked questions
How quickly does it work for constipation?
As an osmotic laxative it usually works within a few hours of drinking the dissolved salts — take it when you'll be near a loo.
Can I put it in the bath?
Yes — an Epsom-salt bath is a popular soak for tired muscles, though the medicinal uses on the pack are oral for constipation and as a compress.
Who shouldn't take it by mouth?
Anyone with kidney disease, dehydration, or the children below the labelled age. Frequent use isn't recommended — ask our pharmacist about persistent constipation.
