About Buscopan IBS Relief

The antispasmodic that targets IBS pain at the source: Buscopan IBS Relief's hyoscine butylbromide relaxes the cramping muscle of the gut, easing the abdominal pain and discomfort of irritable bowel syndrome rather than just masking it. The 40-tablet pack is the value size for people who know Buscopan works for them. For medically confirmed IBS, adults and children 12+.

How an antispasmodic works

IBS pain is largely spasm — the bowel wall clenching harder and more often than it should. Hyoscine butylbromide blocks the nerve signal that drives that spasm, and because very little is absorbed into the bloodstream, it acts mainly in the gut with few whole-body effects. It's been the first-line antispasmodic in the UK for decades.

How to take

Adults and children 12 and over: one tablet three times a day, swallowed whole with water; if needed this can be increased to two tablets four times a day, as the pack directs. Take it when cramping starts, or ahead of meals that usually trigger it. Not for children under 12.

Good to know

It's for IBS a doctor has diagnosed — new gut pain, especially after 40, or with blood, weight loss, fever or persistent vomiting, needs a GP first. Ask a pharmacist before use with glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, myasthenia gravis, or heart problems. Dry mouth is the usual side effect.
