Why peppermint oil

Peppermint oil is an antispasmodic — it calms the over-active gut muscle that produces cramps and trapped wind. The gastro-resistant coating is essential: released in the stomach it just causes heartburn, released in the bowel it does the job. It's one of the best-evidenced over-the-counter options for IBS symptoms.

How to take

Swallow capsules whole with water, as directed on the pack — don't chew or crush them, and take them apart from food and from indigestion remedies, which can dissolve the coating early. Check the pack for the minimum age.

Good to know

For symptoms of medically diagnosed IBS. New abdominal symptoms after 40, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, fever or persistent vomiting need a GP before any self-treatment. A minty aftertaste or mild heartburn is the usual side effect.
