How charcoal helps

Activated charcoal has an enormous internal surface area that traps gases and unwanted compounds in the gut so they pass through harmlessly. That's why it's been used for wind and bloating for over a century, and why it remains a favourite with people who prefer something plain over flavoured antacids.

How to take

Take as directed on the label, usually after meals, swallowed with water. Because charcoal binds medicines as readily as gas, leave at least two hours between Bragg's and any other tablets you take. Check the label for the minimum age.

Good to know

Charcoal turns stools black — expected and harmless. Not for regular long-term use, and not a substitute for medical charcoal in poisoning. Heartburn most days for three weeks, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss means a GP visit.
