Dextromethorphan — not with antidepressants, can cause addiction

See a GP if the cough persists
A cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, breathlessness or wheeze, chest pain, a high fever that won't settle, or a cough in someone with a long-term lung condition needs a GP rather than another bottle. Not for more than a few days at a time.

Product overview

About Benylin Dry Coughs 7.5mg/5ml Syrup

The daytime dry cough syrup: dextromethorphan alone, at the pharmacy strength, quiets a persistent dry, tickly cough within 15 to 30 minutes without the drowsiness of the night-time formula. For the cough that hangs on after a cold, or the tickle that starts every time you talk. 150ml bottle, pharmacy-only, for adults and children over 12.

Why dextromethorphan

A dry cough has nothing to bring up; it's a reflex misfiring. Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre in the brain to turn that reflex down, which is why it's the standard cough suppressant, and why it's kept for dry coughs: on a chesty cough it would trap the mucus you need to clear.

How to take

Adults and children over 12: 10ml up to four times a day, using the measuring cup, no more than 40ml in 24 hours. Not for under-12s. Don't take with any other cough and cold medicine. If the cough lasts more than a few days, see a pharmacist or GP.

Good to know

Not within 14 days of an MAOI or alongside SSRI antidepressants (risk of serotonin syndrome), and not with asthma, COPD or a chesty cough without advice. Stick to the dose: dextromethorphan taken in excess can cause dependence, which is why the pack carries an addiction warning. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.
