Diphenhydramine — causes drowsiness
A sedating antihistamine: don't drive or use machinery after a dose, and avoid alcohol. Not with any other diphenhydramine product, including night-time sleep aids such as Nytol. Ask a pharmacist first with glaucoma, prostate or bladder problems, epilepsy, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
See a GP if the cough persists
A cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, breathlessness or wheeze, chest pain, a high fever that won't settle, or a cough in someone with a long-term lung condition needs a GP rather than another bottle. Not for more than a few days at a time.

Product overview

About Benylin Chesty Coughs Original

The Benylin that's been in the cupboard for generations: diphenhydramine with levomenthol in a thick, warming syrup that eases a chesty cough and the congestion behind it for up to eight hours, and helps you sleep through it. The Original is the pharmacy-only formula; the non-drowsy version is the one on the shelf. 300ml bottle, for adults and children over 12.

Original or non-drowsy

Benylin Chesty Coughs Non-Drowsy uses guaifenesin to loosen mucus for the daytime. The Original uses diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that dries the drip feeding the cough and sedates the cough reflex, with menthol to open the airways. It's the night-time choice, and the one for a cough that's exhausting you.

How to take

Adults and children over 12: 10ml four times a day, using the measuring cup, no more than 40ml in 24 hours. Not for under-12s. Don't take with any other diphenhydramine or cough and cold product. If the cough hasn't improved in a few days, see a pharmacist or GP.

Good to know

Causes drowsiness, so no driving or alcohol after a dose. Ask a pharmacist first with glaucoma, prostate or bladder problems, asthma or a long-term chest condition, or in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.
