Diphenhydramine — causes drowsiness
A sedating antihistamine: don't drive or use machinery after a dose, and avoid alcohol. Not with any other diphenhydramine product, including night-time sleep aids such as Nytol. Ask a pharmacist first with glaucoma, prostate or bladder problems, epilepsy, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Dextromethorphan — not with antidepressants, can cause addiction
Don't take within 14 days of an MAOI or alongside SSRI antidepressants (risk of serotonin syndrome). For dry coughs only: not for a chesty, productive cough, or with asthma or COPD without advice. Stick to the dose: taken in excess it can cause dependence.
See a GP if the cough persists
A cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, breathlessness or wheeze, chest pain, a high fever that won't settle, or a cough in someone with a long-term lung condition needs a GP rather than another bottle. Not for more than a few days at a time.

Where the daytime Dry Coughs syrup keeps you alert, this one is built for bed. 150ml bottle, pharmacy-only, for adults and children over 12.

Why two cough ingredients

A dry cough is a reflex with nothing to bring up, and lying down makes it worse as post-nasal drip tickles the throat. Dextromethorphan turns the reflex down at its source; diphenhydramine stops the drip and adds the drowsiness that gets you through the night. Together they cover the two reasons a dry cough keeps you awake.

How to take

Adults and children over 12: 10ml at bedtime, repeated every six hours if needed, no more than four doses in 24 hours, using the measuring cup. Not for under-12s. Don't take with any other diphenhydramine, antihistamine or cough and cold product. If the cough persists beyond a few days, see a pharmacist or GP.
