Pseudoephedrine — one pack per sale
Not suitable with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, glaucoma, severe kidney disease, or within 14 days of an MAOI antidepressant. Stop and seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, seizures or vision changes. Sale is limited to one pseudoephedrine pack.
Diphenhydramine — causes drowsiness
A sedating antihistamine: don't drive or use machinery after a dose, and avoid alcohol. Not with any other diphenhydramine product, including night-time sleep aids such as Nytol. Ask a pharmacist first with glaucoma, prostate or bladder problems, epilepsy, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not take with any other paracetamol-containing product. Never exceed the stated dose — overdose can cause serious liver damage.

About Benylin 4 Flu

Four symptoms, one tablet: Benylin 4 Flu pairs paracetamol for fever, headache, sore throat and aches with pseudoephedrine to unblock the nose and diphenhydramine to dry a runny nose and calm a cough. The pharmacy-only flu tablet, for adults, over-16s and, at a lower dose, children from 10. 24 tablets.

Why it's behind the counter

General-sale flu remedies use phenylephrine, which many people find does little for a blocked nose. Benylin 4 Flu contains pseudoephedrine, the decongestant that works, so it's supplied after a short questionnaire and limited to one pack. The diphenhydramine means it also takes the edge off the cough and helps you rest, and makes it a poor choice before driving.

How to take

Adults and over-16s: two tablets up to four times a day, at least four hours apart, no more than eight in 24 hours. Children 10 to 15: one tablet up to four times a day. Not for under-10s. Don't take with any other paracetamol, cold, flu or decongestant product, and if symptoms last more than a few days, see a pharmacist or GP.
