A dry, tickly cough is an irritation loop: the throat is raw, so you cough, which makes it rawer. Glycerol breaks the loop by coating the throat in a protective, moisture-holding layer. Because there's no sedating ingredient, it's usable through the working day — and it's the approach pharmacists reach for first for tickly coughs.
How to take
Adults and children 12+: two 5ml spoonfuls up to four times a day. Not suitable for under-12s — ask about children's Benylin instead.
Good to know
Contains sucrose — diabetics take note. A dry cough that runs past three weeks, or starts after beginning new medication (ACE-inhibitor blood-pressure tablets are famous for it), deserves a GP or pharmacist conversation.
