About Bell's Menthol Crystals

The most powerful steam you can make at home: a few menthol BP crystals dissolved in a bowl of hot water release a rush of cooling vapour that opens blocked noses, clears sinuses and shifts catarrh. Bell's 5g tub holds far more inhalations than it looks — you need only a crystal or two each time.

Why menthol crystals

Menthol triggers the cold receptors in the airways, so the nose feels open and the head clears — the same effect as a vapour rub, at full strength. Crystals are the traditional, economical way to get it, and they can be combined with a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil for the classic cold-season steam.

How to use

Add one or two crystals to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water, lean over with a towel over the head and breathe the steam for a few minutes, eyes closed. A crystal or two in a hot bath works too. Never swallow, and keep away from the eyes. Check the label for the minimum age.

Good to know

Menthol is not for babies or young children — it can affect their breathing — so keep the tub out of reach and never steam with them. Persistent sinus pain with fever, or a blocked nose that won't shift after ten days, needs a pharmacist or GP.
