Liquid paraffin — short-term use, ages 3+
Not for children under 3. Take it at bedtime but not while lying down, and not immediately before sleep, as inhaling it can harm the lungs. Not for regular or prolonged use: it reduces absorption of vitamins and can cause leakage from the back passage. Leave two hours either side of other medicines.
See a GP if constipation persists
Constipation lasting more than seven days despite treatment, or with bleeding, severe pain, vomiting, unexplained weight loss or a change in bowel habit over 40, needs a GP. Ask a pharmacist first if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Product overview

About Bell's Liquid Paraffin

The lubricant laxative: liquid paraffin BP coats the stool and the bowel wall so hard, dry motions soften and slide through with less straining, without stimulating the bowel or drawing in water the way other laxatives do. For the temporary relief of constipation in adults and children over 3. 150ml, pharmacy-only.

Why a lubricant laxative

Stimulant laxatives cramp; osmotic laxatives bloat. Liquid paraffin does neither, which is why it's still used when straining has to be avoided, after piles or a fissure, for instance. The trade-off is that it's strictly a short-term measure: taken regularly it interferes with vitamin absorption and can leak from the back passage.

How to take

Adults and children over 12: 10ml to 30ml. Children 3 to 12: 5ml to 20ml. One dose at bedtime, taken sitting or standing, not lying down, and not immediately before sleep. Not for children under 3. Use for a few days at most; if you're still constipated after a week, see a pharmacist or GP.

Good to know

Inhaling liquid paraffin can damage the lungs, which is why it's never taken lying down or given to very young children. Leave two hours either side of other medicines. Fibre, fluids and movement are the long-term answer. Constipation with bleeding, severe pain, vomiting or weight loss needs a GP. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.
