NOT with warfarin — and some other medicines
Miconazole oral gel is absorbed enough to interact: it must not be used with warfarin (serious bleeding has occurred), simvastatin or lovastatin, or several other medicines including some for epilepsy, migraine and the heart. Not with liver problems. Tell the pharmacist every medicine you or your baby take.
Babies from 4 months — choking risk
Not for babies under 4 months or any child who can't swallow properly. Apply small amounts with a clean finger to the affected patches, never to the back of the throat, and don't give a spoonful to swallow. If the thrush hasn't improved after a week, or the baby is feeding poorly or has a fever, see a GP.

About Daktarin Oral Gel

The pharmacy treatment for oral thrush: miconazole 2% in a sugar-free, orange-flavoured gel that's held in the mouth to treat the white patches and soreness of Candida infection on the tongue, cheeks and gums, in adults and in babies from 4 months. Also treats the thrush that grows under dentures. 15g tube with measuring spoon.

Why a gel

Thrush lives on the surface of the mouth, so the treatment needs to stay there. The gel clings to the lining and releases miconazole slowly, which is why it works where mouthwashes don't. In babies, thrush usually appears after antibiotics or from a dummy or bottle; in adults it follows inhaled steroids, antibiotics, dentures or a dry mouth.

How to use

Babies 4 to 24 months: 1.25ml (a quarter of the spoon) four times a day after feeds, smeared in small amounts on the patches with a clean finger. Adults and children over 2: 2.5ml (half a spoon) four times a day after meals, held in the mouth as long as possible before swallowing. Keep going for at least a week after the patches have gone. Dentures out at night and brushed with the gel.

Good to know

Miconazole is absorbed from the mouth and has serious interactions: never with warfarin, and not with simvastatin, lovastatin and several other medicines, or with liver problems; the questionnaire asks. In babies, apply small amounts to the front of the mouth only, never the back of the throat, to avoid choking. Sterilise dummies and bottle teats daily. Pharmacist-reviewed before dispatch.
