Hydrocolloid patches work by absorbing fluid. When you place one over an open or emerging whitehead, the hydrocolloid gel draws out excess fluid, pus and oil while sealing the spot in a clean, moist environment that supports the skin’s own healing. As it absorbs, the patch usually turns white or opaque – a visible sign that it is doing its job. Just as importantly, it forms a protective barrier that stops you picking, squeezing or touching the spot and helps keep bacteria and dirt out, so a blemish can often flatten and settle overnight. Spot patches are not a medicine and do not treat the underlying causes of acne, but they can help a single spot look and feel calmer.
