Antihistamines are excellent at the itch and the sneeze but do little for a blocked nose. Pseudoephedrine shrinks the swollen lining so you can breathe, and because it's behind the pharmacy counter it's the real thing, not the phenylephrine in shelf products. Together they cover every hayfever symptom bar the eyes.

Adults and children over 12, up to age 65: one capsule as needed, up to three times a day, with water. No more than three in 24 hours, and not with any other decongestant, cold or flu product. Use for a few days at a time; if congestion persists, see a pharmacist or GP.

Not suitable with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, glaucoma, kidney problems, within 14 days of an MAOI antidepressant, or over 65; the questionnaire checks each.
