Frequently asked questions
How much vitamin D should you take a day?
In the UK, the NHS advises that adults and children over one consider a daily supplement of 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D, especially in autumn and winter when there is less sunlight. Do not take more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) a day unless advised by a doctor, as too much can be harmful; babies and young children have their own recommended amounts.
What does vitamin D do?
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy, and it also supports the immune system. Because we make it from sunlight on our skin, many people in the UK are low in it during the darker months, which is why a supplement is often recommended.
What vitamins should I take?
For most people a balanced diet provides what they need, but the main one health bodies recommend supplementing in the UK is vitamin D, particularly in winter. Beyond that it depends on your circumstances - for example folic acid in early pregnancy, iron if you are low, or a multivitamin as general cover - so ask your pharmacist or GP if you are unsure.
What does vitamin C do?
Vitamin C supports the immune system, helps protect cells, and is needed to make collagen for healthy skin, blood vessels and connective tissue. It also helps your body absorb iron from food. Most people get enough from fruit and vegetables, but a supplement can help top it up.
What is vitamin B12, and what does it do?
Vitamin B12 helps make red blood cells and keep the nervous system healthy, and it works with folate to support normal energy levels. It is found mainly in meat, fish, eggs and dairy, so people following a vegan diet, and some older adults, may need a supplement - a low level can cause tiredness and other symptoms, so see your GP if you are concerned.
