Gently insert the brush into the gap between two teeth and move it back and forth a few times, without forcing it, then move on to the next gap - the brush should fit snugly but slide in without bending. Using them once a day, ideally before brushing, helps keep the gaps clean.

The right size is the one that fits each gap snugly without being forced, and because gaps vary you may need more than one size around your mouth. The brushes are colour-coded by size, and your dentist or hygienist can tell you which ones suit you.

A TePe brush can usually be reused for a few days, until the bristles become worn or bent, then it should be replaced. Rinse it after each use and swap it for a new one once it stops cleaning effectively.

Both clean between the teeth, and interdental brushes are often easier to use and more effective where there is a bit more space between the teeth, while floss may suit very tight gaps. Many people use whichever they find easiest to do daily - the important thing is to clean between the teeth regularly.

Used correctly, with the right size and a gentle action, TePe brushes should not damage your gums, and a little bleeding when you first start can settle as your gums get healthier. Forcing too large a brush into a gap can hurt, though, so pick the right size and be gentle - ask your dentist if you are unsure.
