Rescue Remedy is a Bach flower remedy: a blend of five flower essences preserved in grape alcohol (or glycerine in the alcohol-free version), which people take a few drops of during stressful moments. It was created as part of Dr Edward Bach's traditional flower remedy system.

Many people say they find Rescue Remedy calming in stressful moments, but there is little solid scientific evidence that it works beyond a placebo or the comfort of a calming ritual. It is fine to use if you find it soothing, but it is not a treatment for anxiety - if stress or anxiety affects your daily life, please speak to your GP.

In the Bach system, the flower essences are said to help balance the emotions, and taking a few drops gives you a moment to pause and steady yourself. Scientifically, any benefit is generally put down to a placebo or relaxation effect rather than an active drug.

People who use it tend to take it the moment they feel stressed and expect to feel a little calmer within a short time. As the effect is gentle and subjective, experiences vary from person to person.

Any calming feeling is short-lived, which is why people typically re-take a few drops as needed through a stressful day rather than as a one-off dose. Follow the guidance on the pack for how often to use it.
