Can you take paracetamol and ibuprofen together?
Yes. Paracetamol and ibuprofen are different types of painkiller and can generally be taken together or alternated by adults, as long as each is taken at its own recommended dose. For children it is best to check with a pharmacist first, and you should never exceed either medicine's daily maximum.
How long does paracetamol take to work?
Paracetamol usually starts to ease pain and lower a temperature within about 30 minutes to an hour. If your symptoms do not improve, do not take an extra dose - wait until the next dose is due and speak to a pharmacist if needed.
How much paracetamol can I take?
For adults, the usual dose is one or two 500mg tablets up to four times in 24 hours, with a maximum of 8 tablets (4g) in a day. Always follow the dose on the label, and remember doses for children are lower and based on their age and weight.
Can you take paracetamol with naproxen?
Paracetamol and naproxen work in different ways and are often taken together, but if naproxen has been prescribed for you it is best to confirm with your pharmacist or GP. Do not combine two anti-inflammatory medicines, and never take extra paracetamol from more than one product.
Can dogs have paracetamol?
No. Paracetamol can be very toxic to dogs, and even more so to cats, and should never be given to pets. If your dog is in pain or has swallowed paracetamol, contact your vet straight away.
How often can you take paracetamol?
Doses should be spaced at least four hours apart, and taken no more than four times in any 24-hour period. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Can you take paracetamol on an empty stomach?
Yes, paracetamol can be taken with or without food, which is one difference from ibuprofen (which is gentler on the stomach when taken with food). Take it with a drink of water.
Can you take paracetamol when pregnant?
Paracetamol is usually the first-choice painkiller during pregnancy, taken at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time. As with any medicine in pregnancy, it is sensible to check with your midwife, GP or pharmacist first.
