Fixodent

Apply Fixodent in small dots or a thin strip onto clean, dry dentures - not too close to the edges - then press the dentures into place and hold them briefly. Less is more: a small amount gives a better hold than a thick layer.

Fixodent forms a cushioning seal between the denture and the gum, and when it meets the moisture in your mouth it swells slightly to grip and hold the denture in place. This helps stop movement and keeps food from getting underneath.

Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently wipe your gums with a soft, damp cloth to lift off the adhesive; swishing warm water or a mouthwash helps loosen any residue on the roof of your mouth. For the dentures themselves, warm water and a soft brush will remove the old adhesive.

A single application is generally designed to hold for around 12 hours, though this varies with the product, how much you use and your own mouth. Reapply once a day with fresh adhesive rather than layering it on top of the old.

Current Fixodent adhesives sold in the UK are formulated to be zinc-free, as too much zinc from overusing older zinc-containing adhesives was linked to health problems. Used as directed, a small daily amount is intended to be safe - check the specific pack if you are unsure.

Swallowing the tiny traces of adhesive that mix with your saliva during normal use is not expected to cause harm. It is not meant to be eaten, though, so use only a small amount as directed and avoid overapplying - if you have concerns, speak to your dentist or pharmacist.
