Nicorette 2mg Original Gum is a fast-acting form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) that helps you ride out those moments. As you chew, it releases a controlled, lower dose of nicotine to take the edge off a craving within minutes – without the tar, carbon monoxide and other harmful chemicals you take in from cigarette smoke. This generous 105-piece pack gives you plenty of gum to keep on hand at home, at work or on the go.

How Nicorette gum helps you stop smoking

Much of what makes quitting hard is nicotine withdrawal – irritability, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, low mood, disturbed sleep and increased appetite. By topping up nicotine in a cleaner, measured way, the gum eases these withdrawal symptoms and relieves the cravings that so often lead people back to smoking. NRT does not make smoking safe and it is not a treatment for smoking-related illness; its job is to make it easier for you to stop for good and stay stopped.

Is the 2mg strength right for me?

Nicorette gum comes in 2mg and 4mg strengths. The 2mg gum is designed for lighter smokers – generally those who smoke fewer than around 20 cigarettes a day, or who don't reach for a cigarette within 30 minutes of waking. If you smoke more heavily than this, the 4mg strength or a combination approach may suit you better. If you're unsure which strength to choose, ask our pharmacist.

How to use Nicorette gum – the 'chew and park' technique

Nicotine gum isn't chewed like ordinary chewing gum. Use the simple 'chew and park' method: chew one piece slowly until you notice a strong taste or a slight tingle, then stop and 'park' (rest) the gum between your cheek and gum. When the taste fades, chew again a few times and park it once more, repeating for around 30 minutes before throwing the piece away. Chewing too fast or swallowing the released nicotine can cause hiccups, throat irritation or an upset stomach, so take it slowly. Avoid acidic drinks such as coffee, fizzy drinks or fruit juice for 15 minutes before and during use, as they can reduce how well the nicotine is absorbed.

When to have a piece and how long to keep going

Use a piece of gum whenever you feel the urge to smoke. Most people use 8–12 pieces a day and should not exceed 15 pieces in any 24 hours. Many people use the gum for around three months and then gradually cut down the number of pieces before stopping altogether. With 105 pieces, this pack comfortably covers a week or more of regular use as part of your quit plan.

Combining gum with a patch, and getting extra support

A fast-acting gum can be used on its own or alongside a nicotine patch as part of combination therapy. The patch delivers a steady background level of nicotine through the day, while the gum tackles sudden breakthrough cravings on top – an approach that helps many people who find a patch alone isn't quite enough. You'll also give yourself the best possible chance of quitting for good by pairing NRT with behavioural support, such as your local NHS Stop Smoking Service or advice from our pharmacy team. If you slip and have a cigarette, don't give up – keep using your NRT and carry on.

Important information

Do not smoke while using this gum. NRT is far safer than smoking, so if you do slip up, keep using the gum and keep trying to quit. This product is for adults and is not suitable for non-smokers or children. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it's best to try to stop without medicines, but if NRT helps then it is preferable to continuing to smoke – speak to your midwife, GP or pharmacist first, as an intermittent form like gum is often preferred. Ask a pharmacist or GP before use if you have recently had a heart attack or stroke, have unstable angina or an irregular heartbeat, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, phaeochromocytoma, a stomach or duodenal ulcer, or liver or kidney problems. Contains nicotine, which can be harmful – keep out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Always read the pack leaflet before use.
